Work culture

Portuguese work culture is warm and relationship-driven. Communication tends to be indirect and polite. Work hours can extend past 6 PM, especially in startups. Remote work adoption accelerated during the pandemic, and Portugal passed a remote work law in 2022 giving employees the right to work from home.

Hiring notes

Employment contracts are well-regulated with strong worker protections. Portugal's NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime offered significant tax benefits for foreign workers, though recent changes have modified this. Freelancers register as trabalhadores independentes. International companies commonly use EOR.
