Role Summary
The Support Tax Technologist serves as the strategic bridge between Avalara's product vision and the real-world needs of enterprise customers. This role combines deep tax technology expertise, enterprise ERP integration knowledge, and advanced troubleshooting capabilities to help customers maximize the value of Avalara solutions. The Support Tax Technologist works closely with large enterprise customers to understand complex business requirements, uncover real-world use cases, and translate tax and compliance requirements into scalable, integrated solutions. Acting as both a technical advisor and domain expert, this role provides expert guidance on Avalara's platform, enterprise integrations, and compliance automation capabilities while bringing field insights back to Product, Engineering teams to influence solution development and improve customer outcomes. The role also plays a critical part in post-implementation customer success by partnering closely with the Implementation Tax Technologist team during hypercare and customer handoff, ensuring continuity, adoption, and long-term operational success.
From a business perspective, the Support Tax Technologist strengthens Avalara's relationships with large enterprise customers by helping them design, deploy, and optimize scalable compliance solutions embedded within their operational systems. Through deep technical and tax expertise, this role improves customer retention, supports expansion opportunities, and increases confidence in Avalara's ability to solve complex compliance challenges. For our teams, the Support Tax Technologist serves as a key conduit between customers, partners, Product, Engineering, and Support teams. By surfacing customer insights, identifying recurring integration and configuration challenges, and providing structured feedback, this role helps shape product enhancements, improve support readiness, and reduce operational friction. The role also drives internal enablement through coaching, office hours, knowledge sharing, and training programs that elevate the capabilities of customer-facing teams.

A successful Support Tax Technologist will:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in tax technology implementation, enterprise application support, ERP integrations, technical consulting, or technical support within the compliance automation industry. Experience supporting large enterprise customers and complex technical environments. Experience working with enterprise ERP systems, with subject matter expertise in at least one major ERP platform. Experience supporting cloud-based business applications and SaaS platforms. Experience with tax and compliance technology solutions, including sales and use tax, VAT, exemptions, returns, and related compliance processes. Experience in accounting, tax operations, tax technology, or related compliance services. Experience assessing and mitigating risks related to sales and local tax (SALT) compliance. Experience supporting customer escalations, leading cross-functional problem resolution efforts, and managing complex technical issues.
Deep understanding of Avalara solutions, compliance automation principles, and enterprise integration architectures. Very strong knowledge of enterprise ERP systems, business process workflows, and integration best practices. Working knowledge of networking concepts, APIs, middleware technologies, and cloud-based application ecosystems. Ability to quickly learn, configure, and support cloud-based business platforms and financial system interactions. Ability to translate complex tax requirements into scalable, automated technology solutions. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with technical, operational, tax, and executive stakeholders. Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive alignment across multiple organizations. Strong customer relationship management and consultative problem-solving capabilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of customer service and technical excellence.
