About

I am a well-rounded developer with over 25 years of experience, most recently working as a Lead Software Engineer on a contract basis at Galent. My career spans from co-authoring technical books to creating state-of-the-art experiences for CNN Video and speaking at industry conferences like Velocity. My work spans a wide range of technologies including React, Node.js, MongoDB, Go, TypeScript, Angular, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform and AWS. I have built complex frontend systems, microservices architectures, API servers, and developer tools, and contributed to open source projects like PhantomJS and speedreport.

● Worked at Motion Industries as part of a modernization effort to bring their legacy internal Java and Cobol application into a React, Node, and MongoDB architecture hosted in GCP. ● Provided guidance on creating an API server using Node, Mongoose, and MongoDB, following RESTful principles, allowing for many complex filters, and documenting usage with Swagger. ● Created a new frontend from scratch using modern build tools and practices including RSBuild, Biome, TypeScript, React, Material UI, Redux, Redux Toolkit, and Playwright. ● Enforced consistent look and feel using themes in Material UI ● Using the flexibility of Typescript, built a complex system of filters using React functional components for proper separation of concerns. Made use of generics for maximum reusability, Redux for managing the state of components across multiple instances. ● Used Redux Toolkit to create an extensible, simple, and type-safe service layer that provided consistent error handling and the capability for data prefetching, caching, and optimistic cache updates, allowing for a user interface that was stable, consistent, and effortless.

● Architected micro-frontend apps using React 18, Redux, RTK, Spring Boot microservices, and a custom wrapper to allow React apps to be embedded as Web Components, served independently via Docker, Google Kubernetes Engine, Google Cloud Run, Google Cloud Registry, Google Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Apigee API Management, Google Cloud IAM, Google Cloud Deploy, and Cloudflare. This app served as the foundation for future apps to be embedded within legacy apps to add functionality that was previously unavailable in legacy systems. ● Created a combination http(s)/reverse proxy server in Go, the purpose of which was to allow developers to view their local changes within the context of legacy systems hosted in the cloud that were extremely cumbersome to install and resource-intensive to run locally. This dramatically increased developer productivity and reduced the number of deployments due to issues that could not be reproduced locally. ● Created a prototype VIN barcode scanner (as VIN barcodes are a non-standard implementation of code_39 and not recognized by the Javascript Barcode API) using Go, OpenCV, and WebAssembly. The component could be used in any browser by providing an image or using a phone camera. ● Instrumental in the effort to transition the company's Oracle forms- and private data center-based back office management application to a web- and microservices-based architecture in the AWS cloud using Angular 12, Spring Boot microservices, Docker, and Kubernetes. ● Championed the use of Swagger/OpenAPI to design and document RESTful APIs ● Maintained and extended many of the company’s legacy B2B apps using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Typescript, StencilJS, Node. JS, Go, Rust, . NET, Azure, and Cloudflare. ● Mentored developers both on my own team and others on best practices for using Typescript, React, Redux, Responsive Design, and building RESTFul Web Services.

● Completely redesigned several key components of CNN.com. ● Maintained and extended the internal CMS/static site generation tool that was built in Perl, XML, and XSLT ● Responsible for cnn.com/video, as well as video and TV Everywhere streaming across mobile devices and syndication to 3rd parties. ● Instrumental in making CNN the first network to live stream content 24/7 on the web and mobile apps. This lead to Turner Broadcasting creating an internal documentary in which Ryan was featured heavily, even in the blooper real. ● Worked with internal and 3rd-party vendors to ensure available capacity and capabilities for streaming video of live events across a myriad of desktop and mobile applications. You’ll never guess which event garnered the most simultaneous views. ● Built a Javascript framework for asynchronous modules from scratch. This framework was used to enable the 'On Now' modules for the CNN Homepage and beyond. These modules increased traffic to CNN's TV Everywhere offerings by orders of magnitude. ● Built automated tools using Vagrant, Chef, and Casper that sped up the QA workflow and was used to test new environments and data centers, including AWS migration, before they were brought online. ● Received industry recognition for the tools I developed to test the performance of the site at build time, including being invited to present several of the tools and processes at the 2013 Velocity Conference in Santa Clara. ● Prototyped massively-scalable data delivery applications using WebSockets, RabbitMQ, Java, NodeJS, and Go that could handle millions of concurrent users. ● Made custom on-the-fly updates to the CNN.com homepage by hand for multiple high-profile events with upwards of 40 million views apiece. ● Assisted in the conversion of several key internal applications from Java to Python.
